34th Infantry Division Campaign Map
The 34th Infantry Division’s World War II route was one of the longest American campaigns in the Mediterranean theater. The Red Bull Division first entered combat during Operation Torch in November 1942, landing at Algiers and helping secure the port and nearby airfields. It later fought through Tunisia, including actions around Sened, Fondouk Gap, Hill 609, and the final drive toward Ferryville.
After North Africa, the division moved into the Italian campaign. Elements landed at Salerno in September 1943, and the division advanced north through the Volturno line and into the Winter Line battles. Its route carried it into some of the most difficult fighting in Italy, including the approaches to Cassino and Monastery Hill, where terrain, weather, and German defenses slowed every movement.
In March 1944, the 34th landed at Anzio and later joined the breakout that opened the road to Rome. After the capture of Rome, the division continued north through Tuscany, liberated Livorno, reached the Arno, and fought into the North Apennines. In April 1945, it helped capture Bologna during the final Allied offensive in Italy. The map shows a campaign defined by endurance across mountains, rivers, fortified lines, and the long advance up the Italian peninsula.
