85th Infantry Division Campaign Map

This battle and operations route map charts the journey of the 85th Infantry Division during World War II. After training in North Africa, the Custer Division arrived in Italy in March 1944 and entered the line near Minturno, facing the Gustav Line north of the Garigliano River. In May, it attacked through Formia, Terracina, and the mountain positions that opened the road toward the Anzio beachhead and Rome.

After passing through Rome in June, the division shifted north to the Arno River line and then into the Gothic Line battles. Its September offensive included difficult fighting around Il Giogo Pass, Monte Altuzzo, Firenzuola, and the ridges and valleys leading toward the Po Valley. Mud, rain, steep ground, and German counterattacks slowed the advance through the autumn.

The final offensive in April 1945 carried the 85th back into motion. It advanced toward Bologna, crossed the Panaro, Po, and Adige, and pushed into the Piave Valley as German forces in Italy surrendered. The campaign reads as a long northward movement through Italy's mountain barriers and river lines, from the Gustav Line to the edge of the Alps.
