4th Armored Division Campaign Map
This map follows the World War II route of the 4th Armored Division, “Breakthrough,” from Normandy across France and into Germany and Czechoslovakia. The division landed at Utah Beach in July 1944 and entered combat during the breakout from Normandy, helping secure the Coutances area before swinging south toward Nantes and cutting off the Brittany Peninsula.
From there, the division turned east and became one of the most aggressive armored formations in the pursuit across France. Its route carried it across the Moselle, around Nancy, and into Lorraine, where rapid movement gave way to harder fighting against prepared German defenses. The Battle of Arracourt in September 1944 became one of the division’s defining actions, as American armor, tank destroyers, and artillery defeated repeated German counterattacks in one of the major armored engagements of the Western Front.
In December, after the German Ardennes offensive began, the 4th Armored raced north into Belgium and helped relieve the surrounded 101st Airborne at Bastogne. The division then resumed the drive east, crossing the Rhine and Main rivers in March 1945 before pushing through central Germany and into Czechoslovakia. Seen as a continuous route, the map shows a campaign built around speed, pressure, and repeated breakthrough across the final year of the war.
