1st Armored Division Campaign Map
This map follows the World War II route of the 1st Armored Division, “Old Ironsides,” from its first combat in North Africa to the final Allied advance in northern Italy. The division entered combat during Operation Torch in November 1942, landing near Oran before moving east into Tunisia, where American armored forces faced experienced German units and learned hard lessons in terrain, coordination, and mobility.
After the fighting in Tunisia, the division reorganized in French Morocco and moved to Italy, where the character of the war changed sharply. Desert maneuver gave way to a slower campaign through mountains, rivers, fortified towns, and narrow roads. Old Ironsides fought along the Winter Line, landed at Anzio in January 1944, and took part in the breakout that opened the road to Rome.
From Rome, the division continued north through Tuscany, across the Arno, into the North Apennines, and finally into the Po Valley during the spring 1945 offensive. Seen as a continuous route, the map shows the 1st Armored Division’s campaign as a story of adaptation: from early armored combat in North Africa to the long, demanding advance up the Italian peninsula.
