3rd Armored Division Campaign Map
This map traces the route of the 3rd Armored Division through northwest Europe during World War II, following its movement from Normandy across France, Belgium, and into Germany. Known as the “Spearhead” Division, the 3rd Armored became one of the principal American armored formations in the European theater, advancing across a landscape defined by rapid breakthroughs, fortified cities, river crossings, and hard defensive fighting.
After entering combat in Normandy in 1944, the division took part in the breakout from the beachhead and the fast-moving pursuit across France. Its path then carried it into Belgium and toward the German frontier, where the pace of the campaign changed. Around Aachen, the Hurtgen Forest, and the West Wall, armored warfare became limited by difficult terrain, prepared defenses, and costly close fighting. During the Ardennes counteroffensive, the division helped contain and reverse the German advance before resuming the drive eastward.
By the spring of 1945, the 3rd Armored Division was pushing deep into Germany as Allied forces crossed the Rhine and closed in on the industrial and political heart of the Reich. Seen as a continuous route, the map shows the division’s campaign not as a simple advance, but as a sequence of breakthroughs, pauses, battles, and renewed movement across the final year of the war.
