9th Infantry Division Campaign Map
The 9th Infantry Division’s World War II route crossed both the Mediterranean and European theaters, giving the “Old Reliables” one of the war’s broader American campaign arcs. The division entered combat during Operation Torch in November 1942, with elements landing in Algeria and Morocco before later fighting in Tunisia. Its advance into Bizerte helped close the North African campaign, and the division then moved to Sicily, where it fought toward Randazzo and Messina.
After training in England, the 9th Infantry landed on Utah Beach on June 10, 1944. In Normandy, it helped seal off the Cotentin Peninsula and joined the assault on Cherbourg, cracking the port’s defenses before shifting south for the breakout from the beachhead. Its route then carried it across France and toward the German frontier.
In the autumn and winter, the division fought in the Hürtgen Forest and held defensive positions along the approaches to the Roer. In early 1945, it seized the Schwammenauel Dam, crossed the Rhine through the Remagen bridgehead, and helped reduce the Ruhr Pocket. The division’s final movements carried it east toward Nordhausen, the Harz Mountains, and the Mulde River. The map shows a campaign that began with amphibious landings in North Africa and ended deep inside Germany.
