2nd Armored Division Campaign Map
This map follows the World War II route of the 2nd Armored Division, “Hell on Wheels,” from its first combat in North Africa through Sicily and into the fast-moving campaigns of northwest Europe. Elements of the division entered combat during Operation Torch in November 1942, and the full division later fought in Sicily, where its armored columns helped drive across the island and enter Palermo.
After training in England, the 2nd Armored landed in Normandy on June 9, 1944. From the fighting near Carentan, the division became part of the Allied breakout from the beachhead, driving through the breach opened by Operation Cobra and helping turn the German retreat across France into a pursuit. Its route then carried it through northern France, into Belgium, and toward the German border.
By autumn 1944, the campaign had changed. The open pursuit gave way to harder fighting along canals, rivers, fortified towns, and the approaches to the Siegfried Line. Seen as a continuous route, the map shows the division’s movement from amphibious landings and armored maneuver to the difficult frontier battles that marked the closing months of 1944.
Companion Map
A companion 1945 version is also available, extending the route through the division’s final campaigns in Germany.
