90th Infantry Division Campaign Map

The 90th Infantry Division, known as the Tough Ombres, landed on Utah Beach in France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. The 359th Infantry landed first, followed by the rest of the divisions. They took part in actions around Pont l'Abbe, La Haye-du-Puits, Mont Castre Forest, and the Seves River before joining the battle to close the Falaise-Argentan Gap.

After Normandy, the division moved east into Lorraine, where the campaign became a long struggle against river lines and fortifications. It crossed the Meuse, fought armored counterattacks, battled around Thionville, and attacked the outer works of Metz. The division later forced the Moselle, fought through Fort Koenigsmacker and the Hackenberg Works, and then crossed the Saar into the West Wall before being redirected to the Ardennes.

In January 1945, the 90th fought in Luxembourg and through the Our, Clerf, and Prum sectors. It crossed the Moselle, Nahe, Rhine, and Main in March, captured Mainz, and advanced through the Thuringian Forest to the Saale. Its final drive carried it into Czechoslovakia toward Prague.
