Genealogy of Car Companies
Genealogy of Car Companies was selected by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London for its Cars: Accelerating the Modern World exhibit.
This automobile history print maps 130 years of car companies across the development of the modern auto industry. The chart traces more than 100 manufacturers, showing how companies formed, disappeared, merged, or became part of larger corporate groups.
From the thousands of early American automobile ventures founded between 1900 and 1925 to the small number of companies that dominate U.S. sales today, the print shows the industry as a changing system of brands, ownership, consolidation, and market share.
Folded into the genealogy is the relative share of U.S. automobile sales for each company, adding a quantitative layer to the history of the manufacturers themselves.
