History of Film

This film history print maps more than 2,200 important movies from the beginning of feature-length cinema to 2023. Films are organized by genre, with each genre shown as a visual stream that grows, narrows, divides, or reappears over time.

The chart begins in the early 1900s, when drama-based feature films first emerged, then follows the expansion of film into genres such as adventure, westerns, war, comedy, crime, science fiction, horror, documentary, and animation.

By showing films by release year and genre, the graphic becomes a compact visual index of movie history: how genres developed, when they became prominent, and how individual films sit within the larger evolution of cinema.
